VAT – Energy Saving Materials – What is changing?

13.04.2022

The Spring Statement by the Chancellor did contain welcome news on wider VAT reliefs for the supply and installation of energy saving materials in the residential setting. Unfortunately, it hasn’t addressed one of the wider VAT technical issues that we at Centurion have had with HMRC in terms of being able to apportion the VAT liability of mixed supply projects that include energy saving works and we are continuing to raise this point with HM Treasury.

It’s important to get information out there to suppliers and purchasers on the changes that were announced though so please find the new HMRC guidance attached here

This is an area where a lot of our Housing Association clients are engaged, particularly on retrofit projects, but it’s also relevant for Universities as they undertake projects on student accommodation. Clearly our network in the construction sector needs to ensure they identify the correct VAT liabilities for projects involving energy saving.
